Land Borders Open for Residents

As published by the President’s Office yesterday, starting on November 1 and after the publication in the La Gaceta newspaper, foreigners who have an authorized legal stay under the immigration categories of permanent, temporary, special or non-resident residence subcategory stay, may enter the country by land.

They must have current insurance from the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), or failing that, travel insurance offered by one of the insurers authorized in CR.

This insurance will have to cover at least the accommodation and medical expenses generated in the event of being infected by the COVID-19 disease, equivalent to the costs of being admitted to a hospital with a minimum coverage of 22 days, as well as lodging expenses for that same minimum term.

Upon entering Costa Rica, the immigration authority that carries out the corresponding control must issue and notify foreigners a sanitary isolation order for a period of 14 days of mandatory compliance, which they must fully comply with during their stay in the country. .

In addition, international land transportation is enabled only for travelers authorized to enter by that route to date (Costa Rican and resident).

Today, tourists are only allowed to enter through air and maritime borders (yachts and sailboats, only for arrival at authorized marinas) and visitors must comply with the migratory requirements established pre-pandemic and in the current health situation.

Recently, an update of these requirements was made, now national and foreign passengers who enter Costa Rica by air should not present a negative RT-PCR test result.

However, it is important to remember the mandatory insurance that all travelers must provide. In the case of residents, they must be up to date with the Costa Rican Social Security Fund, if they are delinquent, they will have a period of twenty-two days to catch up.
